The Olympics Paris 2024
With just 26 days until the Paris 2024 Olympics begin and 59 days until the Paralympics, excitement is building worldwide. But what makes the Olympics truly meaningful? Is it the medals, the records, or something deeper?
The Olympic Creed
The Olympic Creed tells us that “the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part.” Similarly, it reminds us that in life, the value lies “not in the triumph but in the struggle.” This philosophy suggests that the achievement of competing itself holds profound worth.
Think about the athletes who will travel to Paris. Many have trained for years, knowing they’re unlikely to win medals. Yet they compete because being there, giving their best, and representing their country or their sport matters deeply.
The Volunteer Spirit
Perhaps even more remarkable than the athletes are the volunteers. Over 300,000 people applied for approximately 45,000 volunteer positions. These individuals are willing to work unpaid for two weeks during their vacation time, simply to be part of something larger than themselves.
This demonstrates a profound truth: participation in something meaningful provides more reward than financial compensation ever could. The volunteers will experience the Games in a unique way, contributing to an event that brings the world together.
Biblical Parallels
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians about life as a race (1 Corinthians 9:24-26), encouraging them to “run in such a way as to get the prize.” The letter to the Hebrews speaks of “a great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1-2) watching and supporting our efforts.
These scriptures remind us that God recognizes and supports our endeavours, not just our victories. The effort matters. The perseverance counts. The willingness to try is valued.
An Invitation
As we watch the Olympics this summer, let’s appreciate both the athletes’ training dedication and the volunteers’ contributions. And let’s view our own life’s challenges through this same lens—as opportunities to participate fully, to persevere with courage, and to know that we’re supported by something greater than ourselves.
May the Paris Olympics inspire us all to take part, to strive, and to support one another in our respective journeys.
